Lifestyle Family Photos from a Photographer’s Perspective

As a photographer, there's nothing quite as fulfilling as capturing the authentic moments that unfold during lifestyle sessions. Unlike traditional portrait sessions where poses are planned, lifestyle sessions take a different approach—one that prioritizes following the lead of the children to capture genuine expressions, raw exchanges, and true personalities.

My goal is to foster an environment where the family feels comfortable, allowing their true selves to shine. I encourage parents to embrace the spontaneous magic that comes with allowing children to be themselves. I let the session flow naturally, allowing for impromptu games and conversations, and genuine moments of connection.

Sometimes I’m able to be a fly on the wall — usually with families that I have worked with previously and are familiar with being themselves in front of the camera. Other times, I’m a more active participant and take more responsibility for the fun and games. Either way, I catch myself grinning ear to ear, laughing along with them, and feeling a burst of energy and positive emotions.

What makes these sessions truly special is the memories that are created along the way. It's not just about capturing beautiful images for the sake of aesthetics, but about creating a meaningful experience that the family will remember for years to come. Whether it's a friendly (or not so friendly) competition between siblings, a quiet moment of exploration, or fun game of hide and seek, each image tells a story and preserves a moment for generations to come.

I love celebrating the uniqueness of each family and embracing the beauty of their simple moments. What happens during these sessions is pure magic because they are personal—they are YOU.

When I was editing the photo of Odin & Lenny holding Luke’s hand, I had a flashback from Shayla & Luke’s wedding. Shayla surprised Luke with his late grandfather’s wedding ring. The raw emotion in the photo below is why I do what I do! It’s such a blessing to freeze moments like this in time to pass on for generations. I am so grateful for families like the Lindesmith family, for trusting me, embracing the natural, and valuing honest photographs.

With love,

Brooke Buck
